Food Craving

I've been craving for East Indian food lately.  We had it for my birthday 2 weeks ago but that just made my craving for it even stronger these days!  One of these days I'm gonna try making my own butter chicken sauce, but for now, the sauce in a jar will do.

I went to grab some naan and papadum as well as ras malai (Hub's favorite east indian dessert), we'll be having an East Indian feast tomorrow night.  Soooooo looking forward to it.

I'll let you know if the frozen ras malai I got from Superstore is any good.  If it is, we'll never have to go to the restaurant to eat it! *fingers crossed*

Happy 1/2 Birthday, son!

So I have abandoned this blog for a good 6 months, I'm finally returning and celebrating the half-birthday for my little man. Yes, big changes took place in the past 6 months, I'm not only a daughter, wife, I am now a mother!

I can't believe 6 months flew by like that...I mean, it didn't really flew by, I've had some tough (really tough) days in the beginning. But God is good, and I can more confidently say that I'm getting a good hang of motherhood now. Watching a little person grow and develop everyday is truly amazing.

Not gonna bother going back in time now, but I will try to keep up with updates from hereon :) If you ever wanna hear about my birth story and what went on with in the newborn months, ask me, I do have a few stories to share :D

Year of the Rabbit

Oh dear, the last time I blogged was last April and since then I have written my thoughts on my diary but have not updated anyone, bad on me!

This past Chinese New Year, I made a bigger attempt to make Chinese New Year goodies and gave some away to our friends out here in Cowgary. Overall it was a success :) I spent one full day making everything - wu-tao-go, lor-bak-go, and nin-go.

Last year I made lor-bak-go but forgot to write down the recipe so this year my goal was go write everything down so to make it even easier next year!

What I hate about Chinese recipes is that everything is an estimate. In many of the recipes I found, it says "add some of xxx to your wish", what kind of recipe is that?!?! Also, the Chinese measurement system is quite different to what we're used to so I had to spend some time converting everything. Do let me know if you would like to make these goodies next year, I'll definitely share what recipe I came up with :D

Border Adventure

I’m so excited to blog today because I actually have something meaningful to share!

No, I’m not preggers, yet, thanks for your interest but I will share with you all when that happens :)

So, I went back to YVR for the Easter-long and a short trip to Bellingham was planned with the gals from
BBBS before I left. I reminded myself to bring passport about 10000X times when I packed. But I must have been possessed because I DID forget to bring my passport at the end. Don’t ask me how that happened; at least I remember to bring my bras and undies, right?!?

After a brief discussion with the Gals, reading up on people’s experience crossing the border without proper documents (have to say, not much details), and official websites like
this one, I was pretty sure that I would be alright since I have my driver’s license and citizenship card. Besides, my AB DL looks kinda like the Enhanced DL that BC offers now for people who do not want to bring their passport when crossing the US border by land and air. I was gonna be a-o-k, nothing to worry about!

When I told H and M (two other galfriends) about this, they were convinced that I would not be able to go. They even had that officer “NO” look on their face which got me quite worried. Man, did they ever scared me, I couldn’t sleep well the night leading to our trip. The entire night I rehearsed a speech in my head to tell the officer how sorry I was that I forgot my passport at home, and swear I would never ever forget it again. Not to mention telling the officer that I live in Calgary now and imply how stupid I am…also planning to throw in a few teardrops at the right moments when it comes…

Anyhoo, what actually happened was, we got through! Well, after a few hassles, but yes, all of us in the car got through with no problem and I would say the overall experience was not traumatic at all. We did have to wait in the queue (in person, not in the car) for about 40 minutes because many other people, like me, did not have proper documents, but there was no queue when driving to the border kiosk, so I would say the overall wait was reasonable. Four of us had a great time catching up too so we weren’t bothered by the wait at all. Lastly, some of the officers who worked in the office were kinda cute and so it made it an even more enjoyable experience!

Here’s what happened step by step:

  • Our car pulled up at the US border entry kiosk…our hearts pounded…

  • The (young) officer asked for our documents, we presented 3 PP and my ABDL and my citizenship car. We kept a nervous smile on our face to greet officer

  • Officer asked where we lived, driver said Vancouver and one person in Calgary

  • Officer asked who did not have PP, I raised my hand and said it was me…keep nervous smile, trying to look innocent

  • Officer asked why I don’t have my PP, I said I forgot to bring it, apologetically

  • Officer gave us an orange slip, kept our documents and asked us to drive to the office for further instruction

  • We pulled over, went in to the office and waited in a bank-like queue for about 40 minutes…chat quiety, laugh loud amongst ourselves

  • The (hunky) Latino officer greeted us…Good sign

  • He then and asked if all of us had PP. Our driver accidentally responded “Yes”, I mean, we do, but I just forgot to bring it! So I added “I forgot to bring it”. Hunky officer said jokingly “Oh good, you scared me”…atmosphere relaxed further, even better sign!

  • He retrieved our documents and joked about how awful I looked in my citizenship card, “Is this you?”…nervous laugh, but hey, also a good sign!

  • He asked a couple of close-ended questions like “So was this not a planned trip so you didn’t bring your passport?” and then let us go!!!

  • He did say at the end “don’t forget to bring your passport next time” though. I was ready to give him a handshake, but I don’t think the feelings were mutual...
That concludes my border crossing adventure!!

I should also give the Canadian border officer some points too because he also did his duty and asked me why I didn’t have my passport when we returned to Vancouver the end of the day. Have to say though, most points for looking cute! He went very very close to our Driver which made her quite happy because she claimed that he looked like Tom Cruise.

The moral of this story is that border officers are not all mean people! Just make sure you’re not doing anything truly illegal and you’ll be alright J Now I can check “leaving the country without my passport” off as one adventurous risk I’ve taken. I do not recommend that you try what I did though, because I was so so so so afraid that I might not get through and ruin the day for everyone!

Happy Year of the Tiger!!

Since my parents are not around to make me my favorite "lor bak go" this year, I figured I could make it! Mind you I've only seen my dad made it every year plus I don't have the family recipe with me, so I wasn't sure how to do it. I was determined though, and with the help of the Internet I found various recipes and after "studying" them I kinda made up my own that works with the ingredients I have..kee kee...

Taddaaa!! This is the finished product. Next time I gotta add more water I think, it was a bit stiff. Oh, and a bit more salt, it was kinda bland...overall ok la for the first trial, luckily it was edible! Now I feel much better about this Chinese New year :)

Hoping that you'll have a wonderful year of the tiger!

Vancouver 2010

I'm kinda depressed when everyone is talking about the Olympics coming up in a day.

When Vancouver was chosen to be the host city of the Games in July 2003, I remember thinking in my head, "OMG I get to experience the Olympics in my hometown!!" I also remember looking up for jobs with the VANOC...7 years late, where am I? I'm not even in Vancouver anymore.

The Games is like an event that I can only learn about from the screen of my computer and on the news. It's supposed to be so close but it feels so so far!

I want to be here for the games, but I can't. What am I to do???

Calgary Weather Update II

As a follow up to yesterday's post, I thought I'd also show you this:
Dun worry peeps, it's not like this everyday. In fact, I recall this was taken last November, one of the coldest week this winter. I think it did went down to -30c for a week in December but (luckily) I was not in town to "enjoy" it.

What gets me is why the local train stations (C-Train) are all in the outdoor, as you can see in the background of this pic...
